Botulinum toxin, or botulinum neurotoxin is commonly called Botox. It prevents the release of a compound from nerve fibres that should transmit to muscle fibres and activate muscles, which causes flaccid paralysis.

These neurotoxin injections are used to treat a variety of medical and cosmetic conditions. There are now a few licenced brands in the Uk and they are a prescription only medicine (POM).

In cosmetic applications, botulinum toxin is considered relatively safe and effective for reduction of facial wrinkles. The most popular area for Botox in the cosmetic industry is the forehead, for the horizontal frown lines, the glabella “11” lines between the eyebrows and also the crows feet or laughter lines at the side of the eyes, as these are often the most noticeable. However, with more experience and use over time, the industry has evolved to use Botox for other facial applications, such as bunny lines on the nose, elevation of eyebrow resting place, elevation of the corners of the mouth, flipping of the top lip, treating gummy smiles, smokers lip lines and skin dimpling on the chin. The neck can be treated to prevent the pulling downwards of the lower face and Botox can also help with excessive sweating.
